Acetyl-L-carnitine(ALC) is a nature form of L-carnitine, which can be synthesized in liver, kidney and brain tissue according to body needs. It is stored in the heart, muscle and bone tissue. ALC was wildly used in clinic for improving male fertility, which has been recognized. This article reviews the recent clinical application of ALC in other indications except reproductive activity, which mainly include the application in Alzheimer's disease, hepatic encephalopathy, depression and diabetes peripheral neuropathy.
